Vaughn is made in a ritual which is forbidden by the Vampire Lords. What is feared happens, in that he kills his creator before he is bound to his new Master. Vaughn gets all of the Master's powers and is not controllable by any Master. I.e., no walking the chain.
He is eagerly sought after because he has become a powerful weapon and all think they can control him via their vast experiences and pain. Also, knowing who it was who made him will help control him.
Vaughn knows nothing of the rules of Vampires and is able to thus do things other vampires would not. In essence, he learns which laws are physical, i.e., no silver in an open wound, versus mandates, do not feed off of other vampires.
Unlike the popular conception of the anti-Vampire, Vaughn has no trouble accepting his new state - he mourns the loss of his career more than his loss of humanity. Later we can show he already lost most of his humanity in the war. He also has no trouble feeding off of humans, but prefers to feed off of other vampires - his revenge for what happened to him.
